Absztrakt (kivonat)
The fashion and textile industry plays a crucial role in global economic development, contributing significantly to employment, trade, and cultural exchange. However, its growth has been accompanied by considerable sustainability challenges, including environmental degradation, resource depletion, and poor labor practices. This research aims to introduce the fashion and textile industry, with a focus on its sustainability issues, exploring the underlying causes and their impacts on both the environment and society. Specifically, the study delves into the economic, ecological, and social aspects of this sector, aiming to understand how its practices influence consumer behaviors, production methods, and the broader global supply chain. A significant portion of the research focuses on consumer behavior, highlighting the growing awareness of sustainability among consumers. Despite this awareness, the study finds that many consumers face barriers to making sustainable purchasing decisions, including cost constraints, limited access to eco-friendly options, and a lack of consistent information. These findings underscore a gap between sustainable intentions and actual consumer behavior, suggesting that sustainability must become more accessible and practical in order to drive widespread change. Furthermore, there is an increasing need from the consumer side to prioritize sustainability in clothing purchases. Adopting slow fashion principles—such as buying second-hand, participating in recycling initiatives, and reducing the frequency of purchases—can contribute meaningfully to more sustainable consumption patterns. The research also explores potential solutions for enhancing sustainability within the fashion and textile industry, particularly through the reformulation of the fast fashion business model. While the current fast fashion industry is notorious for its wasteful practices, the study suggests that with thoughtful redesigns, incorporating sustainable practices into fast fashion could be possible. However, it acknowledges that the transition to more sustainable models comes with challenges, including higher initial costs and resistance from producers accustomed to traditional production methods. Despite these obstacles, the study anticipates that with continued innovation, regulatory frameworks, and shifts in consumer demand, the fashion industry can evolve to become more sustainable, offering both environmental and economic benefits.
