Absztrakt (kivonat)

Wood waste from both the timber and furniture industries is a rising environmental and economic concern worldwide, but especially in developing countries like Rwanda where waste valorisation structures tend to be limited. This research looks for solutions to the effective use of timber waste produced in Rwanda's wood industry through existing international best practices for regulation, reverse logistics and technological solutions. The research considers the landscape of wood waste management in Rwanda including availability of forest-based raw materials, common wood-based products and by-products, waste disposal methods and efforts for recovery. The findings show that Rwanda's timber sector is growing rapidly but lacks a structured system to deal with wood waste. Most of the wood waste (sawdust, offcuts, shavings) is disposed of, burnt, or added to landfill sites. The main challenges are: inadequate policy structures, limited technological investment, weak reverse logistics, and low public awareness. In contrast European Countries have implemented systematic classification, recovery, and reuse protocols that Rwanda can borrow from to improve their own systems. The study proposes a practical strategy framework for Rwanda by utilizing less complex wood waste classification, decentralized recycling hub approach, public-private partnerships, and integrating principles of the circular economy, such as reuse, recycling and energy recovery. This study identifies a pathway towards sustainable wood waste management, using global best practices localized to Rwandan circumstances and building on existing policy momentum. While green job creation, reduced environmental externalities, and other national goals are significant components, this research will also help to address the knowledge and infrastructure gaps for wood waste recycling systems as well as provide a base for similar economies also dealing with urbanization and resource constraints.
