Absztrakt (kivonat)

The COVID-19 pandemic is one of the most crucial events of the 21st century. It had affected the whole world in a matter of months, changing the status quo of the life we have all known previously. Naming one area or piece of life that was not affected is almost impossible due to the sheer scale of the impact of the pandemic. Although the height of the sickness has passed, along with the worst of the established procedures and lockdowns, the impacts still stay with us. The main purpose of the bachelor thesis is to acquire a deeper understanding about the changes in consumption and financial situation in Hungary as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to offering understanding about the effects, the other objective of the thesis is to see how the impacts experienced in Hungary compare to those in Western and Eastern Europe. The method of research for the theoretical background was based on the collection and analysis of studies and previous researches made in the relevant topics. The practical background included different methods of statistical analysis – including descriptive analysis, frequency tables, and correlation analysis – of data collected via an anonymous online survey. The survey included questions about the demographic background of responders, along with their experiences about the threats and effects of the pandemic on their financial situation and consumption habits. The target group of the survey and the subsequent analysis were active earners; however, additional data provided by students and unemployed individuals was used in the appropriate places of the analysis as well. The hypotheses if the bachelor thesis were determined based on the main points of the findings of previous studies. The main questions were connected to the effect of the pandemic on the changes of the level of income, as well as changes in the consumption of durable and fresh foods, services offered by the hospitality sector, and use of online services. The analysis of the results of the survey found that from the four hypotheses, only the consumption of fresh food – and within that, only the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables – showed different tendencies than the results from other countries of Western and Eastern Europe. Overall, it can be stated that based on the answers of the responders, Hungary (and individuals residing in Hungary) displayed highly similar tendencies to other countries.
