Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis is pretending to understand the importance of knowing how the image of a place showcased in the film and TV industry can affect the travel decision of the average European customer. This topic was chosen to see how the film industry's production affects not only travel decisions of European people but how it impacts the ecosystem of the locations and the economic system of the locations. In the first part, three movies are analyzed, having different outcomes. Borat portrays a negative image of Kazakhstan but improved the tourism sector. The Island portrays a positive image of the Phi Phi Islands in Thailand but negatively impacts the ecosystem. Moreover, Lord of The Rings had a positive image and impact but could not handle the number of tourists at its best. Not only is the image impact improve tourism, but it can be seen how the arrival of tourists to specific destinations has negative impacts such as mass tourism and environmental damage. Cost can increase rent prices and other materials. This analysis was extremely important because it determined the economic impact and the pros and cons of the movies in the places analyzed. This phenomenon is known as Film-induced Tourism and has been reviewed for many years the impact of various films. Now more than ever, these kinds of studies are needed with the boom of streaming platforms and the massive consumption of these materials. In the second part of this thesis, a survey was made to understand the impact of stereotypes, tourism choices, and economic impact on the destinations. The methodology used was to identify three major cores: the consumption habits of movies/series, determining places where people travel the most, and if those choices are based on the influence of images of specific places. It was identified that people in Europe prefer to travel in Europe but is not a vast majority. Also, it was determined that people have more negative stereotypes of Latin America, and few people prefer to go there. It was concluded that people have a great economic impact on their destinations, and a majority have already traveled or intended to travel to countries portrayed in movies with a positive image. The objective of this work was to measure to what extent people can get influenced by an external factor such as a film/series, so it was determined that at some point, people tend to believe what is showcased there and, based on it, make their travel decisions. Also, as not having mostly negative stereotypes within Europe, Europeans prefer to travel inside the continent even though it is their least favorite when showcased in films and series.
