Today, more of the world’s population is bilingual or multilingual than monolingual. Learning more than one language has accelerated in the last few decades and it has prompted me to look into the topic at academic level. I lived in a foreign country myself, where I managed to learn the local language and take it to a proficient level. Additionally, my first child was born abroad and we are bringing him up as a bilingual. This study gives a brief overview of the definitions and types of bilingualism, the main circumstances of its development, and also mentions the bilingual individuals. It seeks to determine that if mixed language parents intend to bring their children up as bilinguals. It also tries to shine light on the tools that are used for teaching different languages when bringing up children as bilinguals. This study also explores if early bilingualism confuses children or if they can knowingly distinguish between and apply the relevant languages to people. I conducted a case study which involved 2 mixed language families living in the United Kingdom. The results show that children who are exposed to different languages from birth can knowingly distinguish between and apply the relevant languages to people by the time they are able to form sentences. Furthermore, the most preferred tools were proven to be reading books, singing nursery rhymes and watching TV programmes on the target language. This study might be useful for mixed language families planning to bring up their children as bilinguals or kindergarten teachers who work with bilingual children.
