Abstract Thesis Title: Environmental Awareness in Everyday Life Among Kenyans Name of the author of thesis: Monte Edwin Bota Consultant: Dr Nikoletta Nemeth PhD Kenya is a tropical country, and the climate is very favorable for agricultural and general plant growth. The United stations has a world recommendation of forest covers for each and every country that is a member. Its forest cover for Kenya is at 10 percent of its total land area. As low as this percentage looks Kenya’s forest cover is at 6.1% (UN,2020). This forest cover is being threatened by environmental issues such as global warming and climate change, deforestation, oil erosion, water pollution, air pollution and waste pollution. These issues threaten forest cover, agriculture, and an environment safe for human life. The environment is at risk because of these issues which mainly are a result of human economic activities like logging, oil drilling, poaching, improper waste handling and uninformed use of agrochemicals for instance. The environmentalists perceive these problems to be a result of lack of environmental awareness on the environmental issues and environmental protection methods among other factors Previous studies within the field of environmental issues have suggested that Kenyans are generally aware about the environment issues. They also suggest that Kenyans get their environmental get their environmental information from different sources. This research looked to find what the level of the Kenyans awareness on the environmental issues described is and what sources they use to find environmental information. This study used a survey in the form of a questionnaire to help collect data on what their perceptions are on their level of knowledge on environmental issues in Kenya, their participation level or willingness to participate, their attitude towards their environment, the role of the media in creating environmental awareness for them and their opinion on how much the school institutions taught them about the environment. I created a survey method where 123 people responded and I analyzed the data using SPSS. The results of this research showed that many of the respondents are environmentally aware about these issues that affect the environment, and they get their environmental knowledge from sources including social media, online articles and eBooks, TV, radio, and social media. Many of the respondents, 91 out of the total 123, agree that they learn a lot about the environment from school on the environmental issues in the questionnaire. On average, 70.1% of the people have above average to high knowledge about these issues. While on the participation level, the same people have a 47.5 % level which is lower than the knowledge level. The biggest question was, why is the level of participation in the environment protection activities lower than the level of awareness? From the results and findings, there are recommendations that could help Kenya realize its full potential in creating this awareness. These include the use of audience specific awareness campaigns by the environment agencies to reach the different age groups in the society. The school learning institutions need to start teaching practical lessons on the environmental issues and enable the learners to participate in environment protection. The media needs to air appropriate programs to suit different age groups and avoid complex terms. Finally, the government should formulate environmental policies that allow the people to actively take part in environment protection by having programs and facilities that facilitate them to do so.
