Absztrakt (kivonat)

The thesis examines the significance, effects, and social perception of equine-assisted therapy, with particular attention to the differences between the perspectives of laypeople and professionals. The topic is rooted in personal motivation, as the author has long been connected to horses and has experienced their positive effects firsthand. The introduction presents the special relationship between horses and humans, which can have healing effects on both a physical and psychological level. The first part of the thesis outlines the evolution of horses and the process of their domestication, highlighting the role of mutual adaptation. It emphasizes that the anatomical and behavioral characteristics of horses have made them suitable for cooperation with humans. The historical overview of the horse–human relationship underscores its millennia-long past and its current therapeutic relevance. The thesis also presents the criteria for selecting a therapy horse and its role in the therapeutic process. It provides a detailed description of the mechanisms of equine-assisted therapy, with particular focus on neurological, motor, and psychological effects. It introduces the main branches of equine-assisted therapy, such as hippotherapy, therapeutic riding in special education, and psychological equine-assisted therapy. The historical overview also covers key milestones in both international and national development. The research applies both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the opinions of laypeople and professionals. The results show that laypeople generally have a positive attitude toward equine-assisted therapy, although their knowledge is often superficial. In contrast, professionals view it as a complex, goal-oriented developmental method. The study highlights limitations in accessibility, particularly due to a shortage of professionals and financial constraints, and emphasizes the importance of raising awareness.
