Abstract Timber is one of the most versatile and sustainable building materials, also widely used in tropical regions such as Rwanda for construction, furniture, and other applications. However, tropical climates characterized by high humidity, temperature fluctuations, and biological threats such as termites and fungi, pose significant challenges to the durability and performance of timber-based materials. The surface treatment techniques and materials used in those regions do not always offer a long-lasting solution to enhance durability and performance; those materials and techniques do not often consider the specific environmental and socioeconomic conditions of tropical regions. Despite the growing industry of timber in Rwanda and in East Africa generally, limited research exists on appropriate and sustainable surface treatment solutions tailored to Rwanda’s conditions. The water vapor diffusion ability of the coatings applied outdoors is crucial for the long persistence of the layer, parallel with a blocked water uptake, because blocked water vapor evaporation from wood causes stresses at the wood surface–coating interface, which result in cracking and laminar detachment, peeling of the coating. lasures are specially formulated to enable water vapor diffusion through the coating layer, whilst blocking the penetration of water. The research evaluates the durability, aesthetic retention, and protective capabilities of lasures against the most relevant damaging environmental factor: humidity. This study investigates the efficiency of lasures as protective coatings and surface treatment technology that is appropriate for East African wood species exposed to outdoor conditions. The study involves experimental testing on six selected wood species from East Africa; Muvula (Milicia exelsa), Umusave (Markhamia Lutea), Libuyu (Entandrophragma excelsum), Cypress (cupressus lusithanica), Pine (Pinus Callitris), and Inturusu (Eucalyptus Saligna) , analyzing their physical and chemical transformations over time. This research seeks to fill the gap by analyzing the performance of lasures when applied to these selected wood species. The analyzed data will provide information that can help timber industries and local manufacturers in East Africa choose the best surface treatment techniques and wood species for outdoor use.
