Absztrakt (kivonat)
Politcal communication in Hungary has come a long way since the late 80’s democratic transformation: from an era dominated by nationwide televison it has arrived to the thorughly mediatized third – or as Blumler calls it in his 2016 works, fourth – age of political communications in about 20 years. Then around 2010 a new era has started, an era I call the age of national consultations. This age is characterized by the ever growing number of hollowed out catchphrases (so-called „magic words”), poorly worded political ads and the false dichotomies of national consultation questonnaires. I theoretize that all this decay of political communication can be traced back to the populist communciaton methods of the governing party, Fidesz. Using value analysis I study campaign ads from several parliamentry elections to show how the language of political communication has been transformed, since I hope that recognizing these patterns will help us developing an effective defense against the populist manipulations dividing our society.
