Absztrakt (kivonat)

This thesis aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the environmental sustainability of the water treatment processes employed by the Sopron wastewater treatment plant in Hungary. Utilizing the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, the study quantifies and analyses key environmental indicators associated with the plant's operations, with a particular focus on energy production and consumption. The research evaluates the efficiency of biogas production from organic waste, examines energy consumption patterns across various treatment components, and quantifies environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions. By leveraging the GaBi software for LCA analysis, this study provides insights into the carbon footprint and broader environmental consequences of the Sopron plant's wastewater treatment processes. Through a detailed inventory analysis and impact assessment, the study identifies critical areas contributing to the plant's environmental performance. Findings reveal significant reductions in total environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions from 2018 to 2020, potentially attributable to process. The study highlights the plant's achievement of generating approximately 50% of its electricity demand from biogas, resulting in a notable reduction in carbon emissions. Additionally, sensitivity analyses are conducted to evaluate the impact of variations in biogas production rates on environmental indicators. Ultimately, this research contributes to the field of sustainable water management by proposing strategies for improving energy efficiency, exploring alternative energy sources, and implementing better sludge management practices. By quantifying the environmental implications of water treatment processes, this study paves the way for informed decision-making and the development of sustainable strategies that align with global environmental goals.
